The bigger chains as you got to the mid 30s and 40s also had you going all over the world which really slowed down the leveling process when you really just wanted to get to max level. However, it did make leveling a bit dull when there isn’t much variety to the quests. I think there is certainly a charm to having quests that are for local issues and are not grand on a wordly scale as that correlates well to the relative unknown of a low level adventurer lacking the accolades to partake in zone-saving activities. I’m not saying one is better than the other. Granted, many quests did have story elements to them and I am cherry picking a bit, but I would still say there is a great chunk of “Kill X wildlife because they are encroaching” type of quests pre-cata. Prior to that, quests were localized to whichever hub you were doing and there wasnt a real difference between someone in elwynn asking you for 8 chunks of meat to make a pie and someone in the barrens asking for 8 chunks of meat to make a pie. It gave the entire zone a more comprehensive goal that you’re aiming to complete. I personally prefer the cata changes to the old zones.
